Sailing the Dodecanese: A Journey of Enchantment and Shared Heritage

This itinerary in the Dodecanese leads you to enchanted places, not touristy and rich in history.

The Dodecanese islands are remote, and this has kept them quieter and more authentic.

These are the Greek islands where we Italians have left a good memory, and it will often be possible to exchange a few words with the local elders in Italian or to hear "Italians - Greeks, one face, one race" to proudly emphasize the similarity between the two peoples.

We will sail every day to a different island to explore bays with clear seas and have fun in the sun and sea.

If the prevailing wind is present, the sailings will be upwind to head north and downwind on the last days to return to the disembarkation point.

A sailing cruise easy even for beginners, focused on relaxation at sea and the discovery of tranquil bays and beautiful villages.

Welcome Aboard: The Start of Your Dodecanese Adventure

First Day of Sailing Vacation

Boarding in the late afternoon marks the official start of your sailing vacation. With boarding in Kalymnos, you'll appreciate both the convenience and the charm of this island: you'll avoid a stretch of sea with strong opposing wind and gain precious time to sail towards the northern islands of the Dodecanese. Moreover, reaching Kalymnos is easy: a short 30-minute ferry ride from Kos will bring you to the heart of the island.

Once on board the Walkabout, your sailing boat for this week, we'll welcome you with enthusiasm and show you around your new floating home. After settling in and getting acquainted with the boat, we'll gather for a dinner on board, where you can enjoy delicacies prepared by your skippers and toast to the start of a new adventure.

With the evening breeze and the lights of the harbor as a backdrop, a stroll along the waterfront of Kalymnos is ideal for soaking in the island's atmosphere. It's a place brimming with liveliness and joy, where tourists and locals mingle harmoniously. A perfect spot to get into the vacation spirit.

Sailing and Diving into the Blue

Second Day of Sailing Vacation

After fueling up with a hearty breakfast, it's time to hoist the sails! Heading north, we'll engage in the dynamics of beating, a sailing technique that takes advantage of the wind blowing almost against the direction of travel. This is the moment when guests onboard, whether seasoned sailors or novices, can test their hand at tacking and learn the secrets of sailing.

The north wind will guide us towards a secluded bay, where crystal-clear waters await us for a dip. The clarity of the water invites us not only to a refreshing plunge but also to discover the fascinating underwater world just beneath the surface.

Relaxed and rejuvenated, we'll enjoy a lunch onboard featuring fresh and authentic dishes. Afterwards, the afternoon is ours to seize with a land excursion. We'll explore the surrounding area, always ready to discover something new, wild, and utterly natural.

As the sun sets, the sky gifts us a palette of colors that gradually gives way to the night's starry spectacle. The evening in the bay is an almost mystical experience: without any artificial lights around, the starry sky reveals its magnificent vastness. Anchored in this corner of paradise, we spend the evening on the deck of the boat, admiring the celestial dome and embracing the serene rhythms of nature.

Between History and Nature on the Island of Leros

Third Day of Sailing Vacation

Leaving the tranquil bay behind, the third day also begins with sails unfurled. Today's sailing takes us to Leros, an island that encapsulates the history and tranquility characteristic of the Dodecanese.

Upon reaching Leros, we'll take a break in nature with a stop at one of its enchanting bays. The clear water is an invitation to swim and dive, for those who wish to explore the seabed or simply float in the blue.

In the afternoon, we let the anchor drop in Pandeli Bay, renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and the wonderful scenery that adorns it: windmills dotting the hills and a castle watching from above. Here, Pandeli presents itself with simplicity, a fishermen's village with an inviting beach of yellow sand and small pebbles.

For those who love physical activity, there's the chance for a pleasant evening walk. You can climb along the path leading to the castle, passing by the picturesque windmills, and enjoy one of the most enchanting views of the archipelago at sunset.

If you prefer a more relaxed taste of the bay that hosts us, we suggest a stroll through the village alleys, in a typical Greek atmosphere. Discover the small harbor, where fishermen tinker with their nets on their fishing boats, providing a picturesque backdrop to your afternoon.

And as the sky turns pink and orange, the windmills and the castle light up, offering us a memorable spectacle. The image of twilight on Leros will remain one of the most precious memories of our journey.

Discovering Lipsi

Fourth Day of Sailing Vacation

The sun rises on a new day of adventure, and our course is set towards the wonderful Lipsi. Known for its charming village and numerous bays with crystal-clear water, Lipsi is a slice of paradise waiting to be explored.

The morning sees us sailing, and as the wind propels us, we keep our eyes peeled for the marine mammals that inhabit these waters: dolphins and the Mediterranean monk seals. Recently, we were lucky enough to spot a mother seal with her pup in the waters here, while encounters with dolphins are frequent. These moments are pure joy.

Upon arrival at Lipsi, the rock formations on the north of the island greet us with picturesque scenery. The rocks raise their silhouettes against the blue sky, creating a captivating backdrop.

The village of Lipsi itself is a treasure to discover, with its cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses standing out against the blue sea, adorned with colorful bougainvillea. Tranquility pervades every street, every square, allowing us to savor island life at a gently slowed pace.

We relax with the awareness of being part of a world still only lightly touched by time and tourism. As the sun sets, the sky takes on warm colors, inviting moments of calm and reflection under a sky that, as always, promises a spectacular starry night.

In Patmos: Tracing Spirituality and Natural Beauty

Fifth Day of Sailing Vacation

We set sail towards Patmos.

Known as the Island of the Apocalypse, Patmos exerts a magnetism that transcends the beauty of its landscape. It is here that Saint John is said to have written the last book of the Bible, the Apocalypse. The famous Cave of the Apocalypse, where the saint heard the divine voice coming from a fissure in the rock, and the renowned Monastery of Saint John built above it, are just some of the reasons that draw travelers.

Landing on the island unveils a timeless experience. The beaches beckon for relaxation and enjoyment of the sea, while the village, with its narrow, history-rich streets, invites us to get lost in its picturesque corners. Yet, it's the almost mystical atmosphere that envelops Patmos, making it a unique place.

We will visit the majestic monastery that stands at the island's summit. This imposing structure rises like a silent sentinel, guarding centuries of devotion and history. It's impossible not to be moved by the impressive architecture and the breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea from its highest point.

The evening will provide a further opportunity to savor the mystical aura of Patmos, where past and present merge.

In Search of an Italian Past

Sixth Day of Sailing Vacation

The sixth day aboard offers us moments of pure morning relaxation in the bay. Surrounded by the beauty of Patmos, we sway between crystal-clear water and rays of sunlight, enjoying the calm and peace in a tranquil shelter of the island.

After soaking up enough solar energy and refreshing ourselves with some dives into the waters around us, we prepare for a pleasant sail towards Lakki, the main port of Leros. With the wind at our backs pushing us, the sailing boat glides and slips over the waves in perfect harmony with nature and adventure.

Arriving in Lakki, we are immediately greeted by a unique mix of past and present. This town, developed in the 1930s, boasts rationalist architecture that makes it a point of interest not only for history lovers but also for architects. The Italian origins of the town ensure that inhabitants offer a warm welcome to Italians, who often decide to make this island beauty their second home.

The historical impact of the Italian military forces is as evident as it is fascinating, visible in the modern urban designs that include public and commercial buildings, parks, and wide avenues. Strolling among these architectural testimonies, one tastes a sense of familiar nostalgia in a Greek setting.

The evening in Lakki allows for immersion in the local atmosphere and discovery of less-known corners and stories of the Dodecanese, making this place much more than just a simple stop: a true cultural discovery.

In the late afternoon, returning to the island's main port, you'll find a lively atmosphere, with a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can relax and take a break from the sea.

For dinner, you can't miss the opportunity to savor authentic Greek cuisine at a typical island tavern. Delicious traditional dishes, such as moussaka, tzatziki, and souvlaki, await to delight your palate. Let yourself be captivated by the warmth of Greek hospitality and authentic flavors as you spend an unforgettable evening in the company of your new friends.
